The future continuous tense (also called future progressive tense) is a verb tense which is used to show an ongoing action that will be happening at certain time in future. It shows an action or event that will be continuing in the future.

The future continuous tense, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, is defined as a tense that is used to “refer to temporary actions and events that will be in progress at a particular time in the future.” According to the Collins Dictionary, the future continuous tense is used “to suggest that something is about to happen or will happen at some time that is not clear or precise.”

How to form the Future Continuous Tense

Subject + will be + present participle (ing) form of verb.

  • He will be playing cricket in the evening.
  • They will be watching movie at night.
  • My father will be driving at 4pm. (future)

Negative Form of Future Continuous Tense

To convert the future continuous into negative form simply add “not” with the helping verb.

Subject + will not be + present participle form of verb.

  • He will not be playing cricket in the evening.
  • They will not be watching movie at night.
  • My father will not be driving at 4pm.

Interrogative Form of Future Continuous Tense

To convert the future continuous into interrogative form following formula is used

Will + subject + be + present participle form of verb

  • Will he be playing cricket in the evening?
  • Will they be watching movie at night?
  • Will my father be driving at 4pm?

Contraction In Future Continuous Tense

We can contract the subject and “will” in future continuous tense

  • I will                         I'll
  • You will                    you'll
  • He will                     he'll
  • She will                   she'll
  • It will                        it'll      
  • We will                    we'll
  • They will                 they'll

In negative sentences, we may contract as follows

  • I will not                 I won't
  • You will not            you won't
  • He will not              he won't
  • She will not            she won't
  • It will not                it won't
  • We will not            we won't
  • They will not         they won't

Examples of future continuous Tense

  • I will be studying in the class tomorrow.
  • I will not be studying in the class tomorrow.
  • Will I be studying in the class tomorrow?

 

  • We will be going to market in the evening.
  • We will not be going to market in the evening.
  • Will we be going to market in the evening?

 

  • It will be raining at night.
  • It will not be raining at night.
  • Will it be raining at night?
