Pronouns are words that replace nouns in a sentence. They refer to people, places, and things. They are one of the most common parts of English grammar and can help to make a sentence more readable and concise. Pronouns exist in many forms, including personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, reflexive pronouns, interrogative pronouns, and demonstrative pronouns. Each type of pronoun has its own set of rules  that must be followed when writing in English. In this article we will discuss the various types of pronouns along with their definitions and examples to help you better understand their usage.

Examples: Kashan likes tea. He takes it daily. He likes two teaspoons sugar in it.

In these sentences, underline words are pronouns.If we don’t use pronouns,our noun will repeat again and again and the sentense looses its beauty.If we don’t use pronouns,our sentence will look like this

 Kashan likes tea. Kashan takes tea daily. Kashan likes two teaspoons sugar in tea.

The noun that is replaced by a pronoun is called an antecedent.In the given sentences Kashan and tea are antecedent.

Pronoun’s role is much like nouns, they can be used both as subjects and objects.They can be singular or plural and they can be modified by adjectives.

Singular And Plural Pronouns


A pronoun can be either a singular or plural. Singular pronouns represent only one thing,place or person but plural pronouns represents more than one.

 

First-person pronouns represent  the person/persons  who said or wrote them. Words such as “I” and “us”

 

The second-person pronouns represent the person/persons being addressed. Such as you, your, yours, yourself, yourselves.

 

Third-person pronouns refer to other people and things that are not being directly addressed.

She,it, and  they are the examples of third-person pronouns.

Types of pronouns


1. Possessive pronouns.


A possessive pronoun is a pronoun which is used to show possession or ownership.

Examples: Our, your, his, her, its,their ,mine, ours, yours and theirs.

       His mother is very kind.

       This is our house.

       This pen is mine.

The underline words are Possessive pronouns because they show ownership.

 

2.  Personal pronouns

 

A personal pronoun is a word we use as a simple replacement for the particular name of person. I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us, and them are all personal pronouns.

 

If a personal pronoun replaces noun which is subject of the sentence then it is subject pronoun as well as personal pronoun.

I like mangoes.

You are looking beautiful.

It is raining.

 

If personal pronoun replaces noun which is object of the sentence then it is also object pronoun and personal pronoun too.

This pen belongs to him.

Alia is very intelligent, I like her.

Tell me what happened to them.

3. Relative pronouns

 

A relative pronoun is a word that is used to join an independent clause to a relative clause. It is used to introduce and to provide more information about the subject (Noun or pronoun)  it relates to. Who, whom, whose, that and which are used as relative pronouns.

 

Examples: Jon is the man whom I was talking about.

                   The boy whose mother is a teacher,is appreciated by everyone

                   The house that was built last year,fell down.

 

4. Reflexive pronouns


A reflexive pronoun is a word that is used to replace a noun when subject and object are same.These are the words ending in self or selves. Myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, and themselves are used as Reflexive pronouns.

Examples: He prepared himself for the papers.

             She drives the car herself.

                  You should do your work yourself.

 

5. Indefinite pronouns


An indefinite pronoun is a pronoun that does not  refer to a specific person or a thing.

Examples: Anybody, anyone, anything, everybody, everyone, everything, few, many               

                  several, some, somebody, someone.

                  Everybody will attend the class

              Anybody helps me please.

                   I called many times but nobody answers me.

 

6. Demonstrative pronoun

Demonstrative pronoun is a pronoun that refers to the specific things.It also expresses of noun as near or distant including in time

 Examples: This, that, these and those.

                   This is my pen.(The pronoun “this” represents the position of pen as near)

       Take those books to the class. (The pronoun “those” represents the position    

                    of books as far)

                   This is bad time.(The pronoun “this” represents present time)

 

7. Interrogative pronouns

Interrogative pronouns are words used to ask questions.

Examples:  what, which, who,whom and whose.

 

8. Intensive pronouns


An intensive pronoun is a word used in combination with a noun or pronoun to place special emphasis on.It ends in -self or –selves.

Examples: myself, yourself, herself, himself, itself, ourselves, yourselves.   

                   I did my work myself.

                  She drives the car herself.
