TENSES

A tense is a form of the verb that express time. The tense of the verb tells us when an action or something happened or when a person did action. Past, present, and future are the three main types of tenses.

Present Tense

The present tense is a verb tense that describes a current action at the time of speaking. It is also used to express habitual or regular actions. It is also used to describe the scheduled events.

According to the Oxford Learner's Dictionary, the present tense is “the form of a verb that expresses an action that is happening now or at the time of speaking.”

The Cambridge Dictionary defines present tense as “the form of the verb that is used to show what happens or exists now.”

Simple present tense is formed by using the first form of verb.

Subject + First form of verb (use “s” or “es” with first form of verb if subject is singular)

They play cricket. (Habit)

He takes tea daily. (Habit)

She likes Mangoes. (Fact)

The plane arrives at 9 o'clock. (Scheduled events)

The Negative Form

To create a negative present sentence

Simply use "do/does" + Not + first form of the verb. (use “do” with plural and use “does” with third person singular (he / she / it).

“s or es” is removed when does is used with verb.

They do not play cricket.

He does not take tea daily.

The plane does not arrive at 9 o'clock.

You can use “don’t" or "doesn't." instead of "do not" and "does not" to shorten the sentence.

To create the interrogative sentence following formula is used.

“do” or “does” + subject + first form of verb
